Setting up a Client to Read E-mail

The Mason e-mail servers allow IMAP and POP3 connections, so you may use a third-party e-mail client if you wish (e.g., Outlook or Netscape). The most commonly used server connection type is IMAP. Using IMAP as your server connection type will leave your mail on the server by default. Alternatively, you may set up your client to connect to the e-mail servers using POP3; however, this option will download messages to your computer and will permanently remove the messages from the server. Mason’s incoming mail server address is mail.gmu.edu, and the outgoing mail server address is smtp.gmu.edu. It is important to note that Mason’s e-mail server requires authentication and encryption. Therefore, you will need to turn on authentication and SSL when configuring inbound and outbound mail servers. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will only allow you to send mail using their outgoing mail (SMTP) server. If this is the case, you must contact your ISP to find out the outgoing (SMTP) address to use. If you have any questions about how to set up your client, call the ITU Support Center at 703-993-8870.
