Computer Purchasing & Support Guidelines for Mason Departments
As of July 2005

(Please note that these hardware recommendations apply to Mason departmental purchases only. For student purchases, please refer to the Computer Purchasing FAQ for Students.)


This guideline is intended as a recommendation for future purchases.

ITU has developed a recommended minimum configuration for the purchase of

desktop, laptop/notebook computers, and printers at George Mason University. Along with this configuration is a list of ITU-supported computer systems providing that configuration. The decision to support a specific computer system is based on the following considerations:

    1) For academic/business environment,
    2) reputation for reliability,
    3) George Mason network compatibility, and
    4) ability for ITU to provide proper levels of computer service and repair.

The purchase of any new computer system should include an on-site repair warranty of 5 years. If this type of warranty is not already included in the base price of the system, the cost of adding it should be somewhere between $25 and $200, depending upon the selected vendor.
