Procedures for Getting Your Computer Back
Online After Being Partitioned From the George Mason Network

If you use a computer at George Mason University and it has been partitioned because of worm/virus/trojan or a copyright activity, you must complete all of the steps in sections 1, 2, and 3 below in order to have your network access restored.

You may complete the steps yourself or have someone else assist you. Please note that if you enlist the assistance of others to perform these steps, you are still ultimately responsible. While resident advisors are able to assist you with basic ITU information, they are not permitted to work on your personal computer. (If you need the tools to accomplish the tasks on the checklist, you can bring a blank CD to the ITU Support Center in Innovation Hall, room 233, and ITU will burn a copy of the tools you will need, including Symantec AntiVirus. You can also get these tools from the Internet on another system, copy to a CD, and run on your computer.)

After you have completed all of the steps on this checklist, you must answer the required questions correctly, and then sign the Statement of Responsibility form stating that you have taken all steps needed to allow you to have your port activated again. You must present your form to the ITU Support Center in Innovation Hall, room 233.

Once the port has been reactivated, if any additional worm/virus or copyright activity occur, you will be partitioned again. If you are partitioned a second time, you are required to show a receipt from a vendor demonstrating that your system has been appropriately cleaned and updated. (If you choose to go to Patriot Computers in the Johnson Center, they will fax your receipt to the appropriate ITU area to unpartition your port. If you use another vendor, you must bring a copy of your receipt to the ITU Support Center in Innovation Hall, room 233, and the Support Center will contact the appropriate ITU area to unpartition your port.) Section VI. Compliance, in the Responsible Use of Computing Policy, provides an opportunity to meet with the Security Review Panel if you have been partitioned more than once

If a worm/virus/trojan is found and NAV is unable to remove or quarantine it, run the appropriate removal tool and remove any virus-infected files. (See http://itusupport.gmu.edu/removaltools.asp or http://www.sarc.com.)

Schedule NAV to automatically update Virus definitions daily.
