Q: I am a resident student and would like to connect my computer to the network in the Residence Halls. Where can I find information on that?
A: Resident students can find information on how to connect in the Student IT Guide, which can be found at http://itusupport.gmu.edu/gettingstarted.html. Each semester residents are required to go through Mason Update and Scanning Technology (MUST), a system that will help ensure that your computer does not have several targeted worms, viruses or trojan horses and is configured to Mason's standard level of computing security. Information on MUST can be found at http://itusupport.gmu.edu/must.

Q: I have set up Microsoft Outlook to read my MEMO email account, but I can't send email out. What's wrong?
A: There must be a check in the "My server requires authentication" box (under Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Servers). Also check your incoming email server (mail.gmu.edu) and outgoing email server (smtp.gmu.edu). Keep in mind you are using a client that is not supported by ITU. (Netscape and Thunderbird are supported.) If you have problems with this client, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to assist you in a timely manner or fix the problem at all.

Q: What is George Mason University doing about SPAM?
A: For general information on how Mason is dealing with the SPAM issue, see
http://itu.gmu.edu/security/aboutspam.html . The university's newest weapon against junk e-mail, Mail Frontier Enterprise Gateway, is up and running and all students, faculty, and staff are included without having to do anything. Mason email users see two changes now—fewer e-mails and a daily digest of junk mail held in quarantine. For specifics on the Mail Frontier solution, please see http://www.gmu.edu/email/spam .

Q: My roommate can access the internet from our room, but I can't. Is there something wrong with my jack?
A: Move your roommate's connection to your jack temporarily. If he/she CAN connect from your jack also, then the problem is not your jack. (Check the troubleshooting tips near the bottom of http://itusupport.gmu.edu/stg/network_connect.asp to check your setup.) If your roommate CANNOT connect from your jack, then you probably have a problem with your jack. (Call the ITU Support Center at x38870 to report your defective jack.)

Q: How do I forward my email to another account?
A: Go to the web site https://mail.gmu.edu, log into your email account. Click on Options, then Settings. Use option for Mail Forwarding. Type in the email address which you would like to forward to, and click on Save Changes. When you forward a message on the MEMO system the system keeps a copy and forwards a copy. Because of this you will need to log into the MEMO system periodically and empty out messages that have accumulated. If you don't do this, your forwarding will continue to work, but people sending you email will receive messages that your account is over quota and that you cannot receive messages.

Q: How do I find out my PIN for PatriotWeb? Is it the same PIN that I use to authenticate to get my email account?
A: The default for your 6 digit PIN for https://patriotweb.gmu.edu is your birth month, day, year in the format mmddyy (e.g., if birthdate is March 1, 1980, PIN will be 030180).
