E-mail Encryption Instrucions: Netscape Messenger 4.7x for Windows

 

  1. Open Netscape Messenger.


  2. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.


  3. From the menu on the left, select Mail and Newsgroups. Click the plus (+) to expand the tree. Select Mail Servers from the submenu.

  4. Under the Incoming Mail Server section, highlight mail.gmu.edu and click the Edit button.






  5. From the IMAP tab, place a check mark to the left of Use secure connection (SSL).
  6. Click OK.


  7. Under the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages heading, select If possible.


    Please note: If you are accessing your e-mail through an Internet Service Provider (such as Earthlink, Cox, Verizon, etc.), your provider may supply their own outbound mail server (e.g., smtp.east.cox.net) and require that their outbound mail server be used. Please DO NOT change this setting.






  8. Click OK, than click OK again.


  9. Exit and reopen before you use your e-mail.


  10. If you are using Symantec Antivirus 9 or 10 and it is configured for "Internet E-mail Auto-Protect", It will have to be reconfigured to disable auto-protect internet e-mail. Click here for the instructions to reconfigure the antivirus client.

    To find out what version you are using, click on the "Help" menu, then click on "About Symantec Antivirus" .
