E-mail Encryption Instructions:
Outlook Express 5 or 6 for Windows
- Open Outlook Express.
- From the Tools
menu, select Accounts
- Select the Mail
tab, then select the mail.gmu.edu account and click
the Properties button.
- Click on the Advanced
tab.
- Under the Server
Port Numbers heading, place a check in the box labeled This
server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both the Incoming
mail (IMAP) and Outgoing mail (SMTP) options.
Please note: If you are accessing your e-mail through an Internet Service
Provider (such as Earthlink, Cox, Verizon, etc.), your provider may
supply their own outbound mail server (e.g., smtp.east.cox.net) and
require that their outbound mail server be used. Please DO NOT change
this setting.
- Click OK
and then click OK again.
- Exit and reopen before
you use your e-mail.
- Please
be sure to do all Microsoft Office updates from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx
(use Internet Explorer) before you setup for encrypted e-mail.
- If
you are using Symantec Antivirus 9 or 10 and it is configured for "Internet
E-mail Auto-Protect", It will have to be reconfigured to disable
auto-protect internet e-mail. Click here
for the instructions to reconfigure the antivirus client.
To
find out what version you are using, click on the "Help"
menu, then click on "About Symantec Antivirus" .
