Microsoft's Vista Operating System

Vista is Microsoft’s latest operating system (OS). Because there are major differences between the Vista and XP operating systems, the ITU formed a committee to oversee the testing of Vista and its compatibility with the most commonly used software applications at George Mason. This testing is ongoing and has been very successful in identifying and certifying most applications’ compatibility with Vista (GMU Certified Software List). However, there are still critical applications which are not certified as being compatible with Vista (Software not compatible with Vista). Specifically, the university’s main administration system SunGard Banner is not certified for use with Vista yet (link to statement). Therefore the ITU is not ready to provide full technical support for the use of Vista at this time.

The ITU’s goal is to provide full technical support for the use of Vista by the start of 2008. Reaching this goal will be dependent upon the results of our software compatibility testing and by key software vendors issuing support and certification for the Vista OS by this date.

If possible, please do not purchase a university funded computer with Vista. New computers should continue to be configured with the Windows XP (SP2) OS but the hardware should be compatible with Vista. See our recommended hardware requirements for new computer purchases at http://itusupport.gmu.edu/dept_desk.asp#config.
