Microsoft Windows 7 Release & Support Microsoft has announced their plans to release a new operating system (OS), Windows 7, in October. ITU support staffs are carrying on various activities in order to be prepared to support Windows 7 by the time of this release. The ITU is testing Windows 7 with the most commonly used software applications at George Mason. Testing is ongoing and has been successful in identifying compatibility of most applications (current list of compatible software). There are still critical applications not certified as being compatible with Windows 7, For example, Mason’s main administration system SunGard Banner is not certified for use with Windows 7 because of the Internet Explorer 8 browser. The ability of the ITU to be able to provide full unconditional support for Windows 7 will be based on the results of our testing. The extent of ITU’s support will also rely on specific software application vendors adopting the new OS. During this time, if you are purchasing a new pc computer, purchase it with Windows XP (SP3) or Vista. Any computers being purchased should follow the recommended hardware requirements. See recommended hardware requirements for new computer purchases at http://itusupport.gmu.edu/dept_desk.asp#config.
